Finding Fontainebleau:
an American boy in France

by Thad Carhart

Doriot Library
Travel collection: France

After reading this book, you will see Fontainebleau and its castle in a new light.

Carhart not only writes about his happy years in Fontainebleau in the mid-1950s, when he was a child, but from there, goes back and forth to the annals of French history from the 16th  to the 19th  century. Many historical figures show up from Henry II, his wife Catherine de Medici, and his mistress, Diane de Poitiers, to Louis XVI, Marie Antoinette, and Napoleon Bonaparte.

In Carhart’s view, the chateau sums up a whole society and a way of life. By preserving it, he argues, the French have preserved their inimitable heritage.

Come and check out this book at Doriot library. A very enjoyable read!
